🌹 What am I grateful for this week?

Quite a lot of content deliverables came due this week — supporting workshops, the team, partnership and sales conversations. I had my bouts of productive procrastination throughout the week, yes, but I’m happy to have stayed on top of it all and not left anyone hanging.

We’ve revitalized the Mission Beyond blog with three new posts in the meantime, kicking off what I hope will become a regular look behind the scenes of Talent Compass. And I noticed that writing more regularly through these weeknotes helped me when it came time to penning…

We’re on a mission to bring a new digital service to life that helps young people enter the workforce for the first time, regardless of their circumstances or background.

As a team, we formed just a few short weeks ago, but already have lots to share about what we’ve been up to. We’ll be using this blog to document our experiences in making Talent Compass a reality.

Why we’re here

Sometimes it’s the simple things — having a great Donut chat with someone you haven’t seen in a while, a meet in the park, or an impromptu create-an-album challenge* prompted by a random image generator. My week felt rich with all those little points of connection. With venues starting to open up across the country again on Monday, hopefully we’ll be in store for a lot more in-person connections in the weeks ahead. I’ll definitely be needing it!

Second week in with Talent Compass and we’ve already had to field our first curveball with a late breaking change in the team makeup — however everyone has taken it in stride and we’ve still accomplished a lot in a short week. Our scorecard for the week:

  • Re-run smoke test ✅, investigate skills database ✅ and conversational UI 🔁, consolidate success metrics ✅
  • User/partner outreach underway ✅
  • Team blog up and running ✅, team happiness index measured 🔁

Kickoff week was a blast! We had our classic moments of things coming together at the last minute, especially when working around peoples’ holidays and availabilities, but as a team we’ve touched on all the key sessions, decisions to be made, and artifacts to be created as part of our week 1 plan. Next week we’ll start scouting our core users and getting those first feedback loops up and running — seeing if we can turn this idea into the beginnings of a proper service.

Mood: 🙂. Quietly content and eager to get a new team off the ground.

Had a really collaborative week between internal projects, hiring panels and the delivery directors. Lots of these threads culminated at the end of the week — in particular, I’m hoping that our playback to the community on delivery leadership priorities across the Cells was well received.

In product strategy land, using our process to test an improvement to the process was surprisingly fun, and something it seems well suited to do. But I’m most excited that we’re moving ahead with Talent Compass (itself born from the…

Mood: 🤨. It’s smooth sailing by most counts, so why am I feeling a bit lost?

🌹 What am I grateful for this week?

There’s loads going on across the business these days — wrapping up our current project strong, getting plans ready for Talent Compass, refining our docs for product strategy, interviews, ongoing GTM and outreach work — and yet I’m feeling calm and able to maintain my balance and focus. It was only a few months ago that I was struggling to juggle everything on my plate, so I’m happy things are feeling in control again.

Mood: 😎. Finding space, closing gaps, taking stock.

Monday’s usually not a popular choice for favorite day of the week, but we went live! And this was even with a bit of drama sliding our release window back from 10am to 3pm, 5pm and eventually getting confirmation around 5:30? I do miss the buzz of being huddled up with the team through a release, as there’s a bit less fanfare when it’s all remote and trading Slack messages of “not yet” — but still an awesome achievement to have built and shipped the journey in a matter of weeks.

🌹 What am I grateful for this week?

I started with a new mentee this week, and initially it wasn’t clear what value I could offer given our very different backgrounds. But through our conversation I realized that just sharing an industry view would be enough, and that we could take it slow and see where it goes. Glad I’m continuing to engage with mentoring programs and help where I can.

Friday brought with it an unexpected note, thanking me for a time I was willing to say I’d gotten something wrong in a meeting.*…

Referrals were a positive theme for the week. I had a nice opportunity to pay it forward after a qualifying call by passing it on to someone who could be a better help. Usually the instinct is to always want to help directly, but when you’re not in the best position to do so it can often be a disservice to try when there are better options available.

Both of our project teams are ticking along smoothly as well, both having great showcases on Friday. When I was…
